Question About Vetting Process

If a surgeon on the icarebetter list does not list a specialization in areas like bowel, bladder, or thoracic care, does this mean they themselves are not an expert in those areas, or does it mean that they do not work on a multi-disciplinary team which would specialize in those areas? I notice only a couple surgeons list those specialties and I would like to understand how they are vetted for their expertise in these areas as I evaluate possible surgeons for my 3rd endometriosis surgery which will require a bowel resection at minimum.

Great questions. In some cases, the gynecologic surgeon may personally perform that bowel portion of the surgery. In other cases, they may work with a colorectal surgeon. If the surgeon or their team meets our standards in that area, they can receive that designation, regardless of who performs it.

For a third surgery with likely bowel involvement, it is very reasonable to prioritize surgeons or teams specifically listed with bowel expertise. Because for the other ones, we do not have any evidence to confirm the expertise.
